County Behavioral Health Dep’t Receives Federal Grant Funding

A San Luis Obispo County effort to keep people with mental illness or chronic substance abuse issues out of jail has received a financial shot in the arm. The county’s Behavioral Health Department and Drug and Alcohol Services announced yesterday that they had applied for and received an annual federal grant of 330,000 dollars. Officials say the money will fund a team that will join the Sheriff’s Office’s existing Community Action Team. Together, they hope to reduce impacts on the jail, emergency departments, while cutting down on the number of mentally ill in the justice system.
