New Law Helps Victims of Sexual Assault

Governor Gavin Newsom recently signed Assembly Bill 218 into law. The bill extends the statute of limitations for victims of childhood sexual abuse to file a lawsuit from age 26 to age 40 or within five years from the date of discovery of an adult psychological injury caused by the childhood sexual assault. That new law opened the door for a Los Osos woman to sue a Modesto church and the youth pastor who worked there. According to the Tribune, Tracy Epler filed the complaint last week and says the church covered up the abuse in the 1970’s, allowing Les Hughey to perpetuate his behavior at other churches for decades.
