San Luis Obispo police Captain Ian Parkinson will most likely face Sgt. Jerry Lenthall or Police Chief Joe Cortez in a runoff this fall for county sheriff. Parkinson had 41 percent of the vote, while Cortez had 18 percent versus Lenthall’s 17 percent. The sheriff’s race will go to a runoff in the Nov. 2 election because none of the six candidates received more than 50 percent of the vote. The winner would succeed Sheriff Pat Hedges, who is retiring after 12 years.
