San Luis Obispo police Captain Ian Parkinson will most likely face Sgt. Jerry Lenthall or Police Chief Joe Cortez in a runoff this fall for county sheriff. Parkinson had 41 percent of the vote, while Cortez had 18 percent versus Lenthall’s 17 percent. The sheriff’s race will go to a runoff in the Nov. 2 election because none of the six candidates received more than 50 percent of the vote. The winner would succeed Sheriff Pat Hedges, who is retiring after 12 years.

Are campaign signs and the “I voted” stickers really necessary? And did Whitman really spend that much just to win a primary?
