Remembering Kurt. A note from Suzanne.

Kurt Donald Cobain

February 20, 1967 – April 5, 1994

Today, Kurt would have been 52. It’s hard to imagine what life would be like with him still in the world. I try but the possibilities are endless and it really just gets me nowhere. Would he have kicked the habit? Would Nirvana still be out there on the road, kickin out the jams? Maybe Kurt would have stepped back from the public life that he wasn’t super comfortable with anyway…and said farewell to music to raise his daughter? Would the Foo Fighters even exist? These are the things I’m pondering today as I think of Kurt.

I read about a recent quote from Francis Bean that, in essence, compared her dad to the likes of Elvis or John Lennon (read here) and while it’s taken a bit out of context for me to say it that way, that general idea isn’t far off the mark in my opinion. For an entire generation, Kurt was our voice. He was one of our more prolific songwriters…we revered him…saw him as a ‘God’, if you will.

Before Nirvana, there was nothing like them…and even after, there were a lot of bands that looked like them or sounded like them but there has never been and never will be another Nirvana. It was a certain place in time like many of our favorites…classics. It can’t be recreated.

For the many hours of company and entertainment and the life time of memories that I have with your music, I thank you, Kurt. Everyday, I remember you. Today, I honor you.
