PODCAST - Girl Scouts are looking to make hugs more valuable in the marketplace of affection

November 22nd, 2017

The Girl Scouts issued a warning to parents this holiday season, asking them not to force their daughters to hug relatives. “Telling your child that she owes someone a hug either just because she hasn’t seen this person in a while or because they gave her a gift can set the stage for her questioning whether she ‘owes’ another person any type of physical affection when they have bought her dinner or done something else seemingly nice for her later in life,” reads the post on the Girl Scouts’ website. A rep explained that the advice was partly in reaction to the recent string of news stories on sexual harassment rocking a growing number of industries. Some critics were not moved by the suggestion, claiming that unless something inappropriate is happening, there shouldn’t even be a discussion at all.
