S.M.P.D. Asking For Public’s Participation In New Program

The Santa Maria Police Department is asking the public to take part in a new Surveillance Camera Registry program. The new voluntary program is designed to help Police with ongoing criminal investigations. Residents and business owners with security cameras would register with the Police department, helping them map out where the cameras are located. That, in turn, would help police begin their investigations sooner. Not everyone is on board with the idea. Some argue the proliferation of public and private surveillance cameras are eroding civil liberties and freedoms by creating a chilling effect on movement and privacy.
