Drivers in Santa Maria may notice an increase in patrols tomorrow. Extra officers will be patrolling areas that have seen a higher than the average number of bike and pedestrian traffic crashes. Officers will look for violations made by drivers, bike riders and pedestrians. Bikers will be cited if they fail to follow the same laws as motorists. Pedestrians crossing the street illegally or failing to yield to drivers who have the right of way will also get a ticket. California has the highest number of bicycle and pedestrian deaths in the nation.
